I've managed to slow down the roast somewhat since I posted that by using more beans and a chimney on the popper. It has made a big difference. Still working on this first batch of beans...but will be ordering some more soon and thinking I may make a few more advanced mods to the popper by then. Really need a better grinder and more than anything right now though. Thanks for the feedback. You need to shoot for 10-12 minutes to mellow out the beans, which will also emphasize the low notes. Unfortunately without some modifications to your popper to limit its heating element you won't easily be able to accomplish this. Bill Butler hooked me up with some old safelight bulbs, though one turned out to be a 100w bug light :D And then a few days later I scored another bulb and 2 fixtures - but they set me back a few bucks. So now I have 2 amber safelights in the bedroom with the enlarger, a red bulb in the laundry room with the trays, and another red bulb in the dining room just outside the actual darkroom. It works quite well, lots of light to work by and no fogging at all after a 5 minute test of pre-sensitized paper! Now I just need to find a 75 or 80mm lens for one of the enlargers to get rid of the falloff when printing 120 negs! I saw those…but they didn’t look like they’d be quite right. And they are pretty bright.
